Product quality information, particularly that contained in a Certificate of Analysis, is critical to the successful manufacture and sale of quality materials to the food industry.
National Starch & Chemical Company (NS&C), a member of the Ingredion Group, has a large number of worldwide manufacturing facilities incorporating a range of different SAP architectures. Passing product quality information between these different SAP systems and between third party laboratories and NS&C’s SAP systems is not a standard capability of SAP. An added complexity is the fact that each company or business unit has different ways of using material names, lot numbers, batch numbers, test methods, units of measure, characteristic names, and result values.
Rex were asked to provide, in a short time frame, a flexible solution that complemented the current NS&C environment whilst providing significantly more flexibility for translation within the data. The solution had to be easily applied to both intra-company and external partner data exchange.
Alternatives to the electronic transfer of such information generally require manual transcription of Quality Testing Reports or Certificates of Analysis from one system to another. This is costly, time consuming and prone to transcription errors.
SAP provides a number of different building blocks for such a solution, namely:
The solution designed by Rex provides:
The solution was designed, developed and implemented within 12 weeks. The initial implementation enabled the transfer of product quality data for a limited number of starch products between internal US and European SAP systems. This has subsequently been expanded to receive quality data from a third party. Future plans involve its use by National Starch & Chemical companies and other third parties.
“We are very satisfied with the professional approach taken by Rex in understanding our requirements and implementing such a flexible application. The solution has immediately helped reduce costs and improve average time for delivery”
